Gone are the days when you need to watch the weather forecast on the news channels to know whether or not you need your jacket and umbrella. With a simple click on your smartphone, you can get to know all forecast updates. A new device, however, is promising to not only update you on weather changes but to also show you live footage of what the sky looks like.
After a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in 2014, California-based company BloomSky developed a weather camera station and an application to improve the way people receive weather updates. For their second campaign, the company is aiming to provide a new generation of its weather camera to make weather observation about more than just numbers.
“For decades, weather information meant receiving numerical data from a centralized source. We believe weather cannot be understood merely through numbers, but needs to be felt through observation,” the company says. “This is why we created BloomSky, to start a community where everyone is a weather reporter, contributing to the birth of a more human experience with weather information.”
According to the company, Sky 2 is “the world’s first community-based smart weather camera station with real-time images, time-lapse and precise weather data.”
The new generation of the weather camera station, Sky 2, captures real-time images every five minutes, and at the end of the day, it creates a time-lapse that shows how the weather has changed. The camera can be used by any urban community to measure temperature, humidity, barometric pressure and precipitation. The new camera is also updated to include Storm – an accompanying accessory that measures total rainfall, wind speed and wind direction, as well as UV.
By choosing to share weather with other users, the device’s application can help create a community of weather news feed.
The company asked for a US $80,000 but has notably surpassed that goal, collecting some US $228,848 at the time of writing. Over 100,000 users currently have a camera weather station.
“We are committed to improving the BloomSky experience through continuous progress and innovation,” the company says. “If we reach US $300,000 in goal, we will develop an Outdoor Air Quality monitoring system to enrich your overall data wealth.”
